Bits & Pieces
v 1606
-- The Dutch
East India Company (VOC) ship Duyfken,
under Captain Willem Janszoon, explored the western coast
of Cape York Peninsula, near what is now Weipa. This was the
first recorded landfall by a European on Australian soil.
My introduction to the history of Australia started right there – “Australia Since
1606”. This was the standard history book in high school. A book that focused
totally on the squatting on Australian soil by European invaders without
permission of the nation’s original inhabitants.
Is it any wonder that we are so slow in truly understanding what our ancestors have
done without ever signing a treaty to legalise their settlement? Isn’t it time?
