Indigenous Australians, with their unique
cultures, are a permanent and distinct part of Australia. The past discredited
assimilation policies, assuming they be absorbed and ceased to exist in their
difference. The all of Australia did everything it could to make that happen.
Thankfully, it didn't happen. Indigenous people maintain their identities
against all the odds that were stacked against. Now, with even another
proponents supporting some form of recognition and native title, reminding us
and then that indigenous people already have distinct legal rights, we know
that the world's oldest living cultures are here to stay. – Fred Chaney
