Q. Do you think gender equality in ministry at all levels could be a key factor in overcoming clericalism?
Rafael. Yes, it is. I have heard homilies, written and given by
women, a thousand times better than those by most priests. It changes things.
It's a matter of dignity, human and baptismal. It shapes relationships in the
church.
It is not helpful that a man studying
to be a priest relates with men for 90% of his formation life. It shapes the
way he sees society and interacts with people. His view of the world will be
different from if he had a regular life every day, interacting and learning
from women and men and all the people in society and not simply with men.
The participation of women, not only
in governance and economic affairs, but at all levels in formation and in
parishes is important. Gender diversity has to be included at every level in
the church. If we want to change, we have to change mentalities.
